Civilization Round-Up

In this project students will work in small groups to investigate early civilizations and prepare a a presentation. The presentation will include key elements of the civilization.

Each student completes the research by searching through the textbook, lecture notes, and the web. As part of your presentation each section should include information on at least 4 topics to lead you to the final question:

  • Geography
    • Where were they located? What is the place called today? What effect did geography have on the civilization?
  • Time Period
    • When did they emerge? When was their peak? How long were they around?
  • Government
    • Why type of ruler did they have? How were they organized? Laws?
  • Economy
    • What role did trade have? What were their major products? Did geography affect trade? Were their social classes based on economy?
  • Beliefs
    • What kind of religion of worship did they practice? Were they a theocracy? Did they believe in life after death?
  • Contributions
    • What were the major contributions of their civilization at the time?
  • Writing
    • What form of communication did they have? Why/how did it develop?
  • Slavery
    • How was slavery part of this civilization? Was it permanent?
  • Arts
    • What role did the arts have on the civilization? What were the main forms?What can we learn about the art from the culture?
  • Rise/Fall
    • What caused the civilization to fall? Did they conquer other civilizations? Were they conquered?
  • Technology
    • What innovations were made?Infrastructure?
  • FINAL QUESTION – YOUR “SO WHAT?”
    • The significance of the civilization to our modern society.
      • Are there lasting contributions today? what did they leave “us”?

You will reach your conclusion/significance by incorporating evidence, which means you need to practice citations. Additionally, try to include visual evidence.

 

You will present a 5 minute presentation to the class.
