Final Project

This project requires you to demonstrate your knowledge of the Middle East from Pre-Islamic Arabia through the 20th century. You will need to recall information, summarize, and draw conclusions on what you believe to be the most important events during this time period.

Your project will consist of three parts: a timeline, paragraphs for each events, and a paragraph explaining what you believe to be the most significant event in Middle Eastern History. The project spans the length of what we have addressed this semester. You may focus on any events, people, places, or eras addressed this semester. Be sure to read all the instructions.

Task #1 –Timeline (Pre-Islamic Middle East to 20th century)

Events may include anything that you consider significant. Some suggestions include: the hijra, Caliph Ali’s murder, one of the battles in the Crusades, the mosque in Cordoba, Timbuktu is established a a center of learning, Mongol sack of Baghdad, Ottomans expand west, etc. These events may be generalized time periods or themes as listed above or specific events from these time periods such as the weapon technology, the rise of a political leader, or death of a key person.

Task #2- Summary of Each Event

Write a one paragraph summary for each event and its importance to Middle Eastern civilization. Your paragraphs should include specific dates and at least one significant person, place, and artifact connected to each event on your timeline. You will also need to include: either a quote from a primary source (from the time period) or an image of an artifact from each event. (Student created illustration, political cartoon, photo-copied image, photograph, etc.)

Task #3- The Most Significant Event for the Middle East. Based on the events you identified on your timeline, identify what you feel is the most significant event, time period, or turning point in the Middle East. Explain and justify why you selected this event as the most significant.
