CLAIM TESTING PROGRESSION OVERVIEW
Claim testing will help you evaluate assertions and gives shape to one of the most important and useful critical thinking practices in history and life. Since this course is all about evaluating historical accounts, making historical interpretations, and participating in accountable talk in the classroom, you will learn the skill of claim testing early and use it frequently.
One of my jobs is to equip you with the language and practice needed to analyze claims made in many forms, including primary and secondary sources, data charts, videos, infographics, and even in-class discussions. By using intuition, logic, authority, and evidence to test others’ claims and back up your own, you will become better prepared to critically evaluate information.
We will do some exercises with claim testing this semester; this Claim Testing-Evaluation Rubric will help you in later exercises.
